THE SOUTHGATE FAMILY WELCOMES YOU...

If you were to ask the typical person about religion and worship, their answer would probably refer to buildings and locations and elaborate rituals. At the Southgate church we believe that God cares very little for any of those things. God did not send a new set of rules to redeem lost humanity. God sent His Son so that we may learn of His love for us. God’s agenda has always been people centered, because people. . . each one of us. . .need the Lord.

The Southgate church is made up of people who seek to be only Christians. Our desire is not to be another denomination, but an independent body of believers who follow the Bible in faith and practice. We believe the phrase "church of Christ" is not a title to be used in a sectarian or denominational sense, but it is intended to describe our desire to be a church that belongs to Christ. The Bible says, "All the churches of Christ greet you." (Romans 16:16). However, it is just as accurate to describe the church as a "family of believers" (Galatians 6:10) or the "body of Christ" (1 Corinthians 12:27). These and similar Biblical names are not proper names, but descriptive expressions which show how the church is related to Christ and His Father.

Individually, Christ's followers are known as "Christians" in the Bible. "The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch." (Acts 11:26)

Our plea is distinctive. We believe in the divine inspiration of the entire Bible and we believe that the Bible is sufficient to guide us in all matters of faith. We insist that the moral principles of Jesus are absolute truths to be lived out in the personal life of the child of God. We have no creed or catechism to present, but accept Christ as our only creed and the Bible as our only guidebook.

At the Southgate church, we believe that you will find a group who loves God and cares about people. Our goal is that all people, regardless of race, background, health, physical impairment or age group will feel welcome in our church family.

When you visit with us you will notice that we talk about the church in terms of a body or a family. This is more than talk. God uses the metaphors of family and body to speak of those people who choose to follow Him.

One thing you will notice as you visit with us is that like most families and bodies that you see, we are not perfect. We make mistakes and sometimes fail to live up to our ideals. The one big positive that we have going for us is that we have a Perfect Father and Head to lead us. We want you to know Him, too.

So, come be our guest and let us give you a glimpse of what being part of the Southgate church of Christ looks like. We hope that you find us to be an incomplete, yet enthusiastic group of people who love God, who take care of each other and who want to get to know you.

In Christian Love
