Missions

Southgate missions took a new direction in 1989 after hurricane Hugo devastated the island of Jamaica. Two individuals, Roger Sidwell and Barb Tincher organized a team consisting primarily of teenagers to help with the rebuilding effort there.

From this small beginning a work developed there which has built houses for native Jamaicans, meeting houses for churches, provided medical assistance through organized teams of doctors and other medical staff, playgrounds for communities and provided countless opportunities to share their faith story with people in Jamaica.

All funding of transportation, food and lodging has been the responsibility of each team member and in many cases funds of the mission effort are shared by those participating in the trip.

We practice the principles learned in the story of the "Good Samaritan" Luke 10:33. Our intent is to simply be LIFE LIGHTERS to those whose candles have been dimmed by life circumstances. Our aim is to share a Savior through our actions, not just words!

During the past 18 years our mission outreach has taken us to a summer Bible camp in Canada where preseason preparations are made to accept dozens of youth in one week sessions. We have weekends helping to repair facilities in Pleasant Plains Ohio children's home and Bible camps within Ohio.

Our volunteers have traveled to rural Tennessee to join other faith based organizations in building federally funded houses for the very poor.

During 2006, Southgate mission teams spent time in New Orleans on 8 different occasions to help with Katrina rebuilding efforts along with thousands of faith groups from all over America.

In 2007 a team traveled to Honduras to assist in a medical mission effort and to help with building houses for orphans at the Las Palmas Refuge near San Marcus de Colon.

Our local Good Neighbor Ministry has recently been involved in community efforts which include roof/porch repairs for a widow and house vinyl siding for a deserving family.

In 2008 we are scheduled to help build a community improvement center (soup kitchen) for the homeless in downtown Ocho Rios Jamaica. This is a month long effort of teams made up of many different mission groups from Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky during the month of October.

In every mission effort we include willing people regardless of religious preference. Skills are optional and blessings are always greater than the intended purpose.

Are you ready for a life changing event?

Come...join us as we make ready for God to bless lives!
